You know it. I know it. I think nearly everyone who even remotely cares about Google’s latest cellphone offering knows that the cutely-named Pixel 2 will not feature a headphone jack. This is, of course, a bit ironic since Google made fun of Apple just a year ago for dropping the jack from the iPhone 7.
Yes, I know the Pixel 2 is going to look sexy, and even sport some lusty features like a sick camera (at least 2 megapixels) and Google Lens support (so your phone can tell you what you’re looking). But, like most reasonable, sane individuals, I refuse to buy a cell phone without a headphone jack. Why? Well, one reason is that I’d really rather not spend $100 on wireless earbuds that I’ll probably end up losing to the great ether within, oh, 48 hours or so. Also, the headphone jack is just a better, more robust port all-around than USB. I’ll say it: I like how it just slides in there. No wiggling, no frustration, no up or down. Just push it in there and you’re done… wham, solid connection. I’m just not ready to give that up.
So I suspect I’m fighting a losing battle with this, but I’ve got to stick to my jacked principles. Honestly, if forced into a corner, I might even consider going back to my old LG flip phone. Suffice to say I really hope Samsung, LG, and the other Android leaders stay cool about this one and recognize the value of functionality over aesthetics for a little while longer.
