Older gamers like myself who remember the awe of romping around inside a giant 3D mech for the first time in MechWarrior (1989) or MechWarrior 2 (1995) got some exciting news this week: a proper sequel to MechWarrior 4, released 15 years ago, is finally on the horizon. Probably just another year or so.
MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is clearly still in development stage, but Piranha Games has already let a few lucky peeps take it for a test run. For that, check out the trailer and gameplay footage below. The mechanics and weapons all look good, but the graphics still have a pretty bare-bones feel to them, in my opinion. I’m also sitting here wondering how likely military helicopters would still be used in the year 3000. And against mechs no less. Hmm.
It’s hard to imagine a game better suited to VR than MechWarrior. Thankfully, with Mech 5, it looks like my childhood dream of piloting around in a VR mech will finally come true. We may not have flying cars or in-house robots (yet!) but, man, this long-awaited sequel reminds me that we’re living in the future. The future! And it only took 30 years to get here.
